Funny thing about this is, that the Bundesdruckerei (“Government Printing Office”) contracted Samsung(!) to produce the digital passports and the readers. If you want to make sure, that only authorized people scan your new passport, you can get one of these “protection covers“.

The technology proposed here, by BUNDESDRUCKEREI, is the result of an entire lack of sensible new alternatives!
The company has not come up itself with a single worthwhile security concept that would add one iota to the existing standards, for the past 20 years. What you see here is the result which full-fledged nitwits came up with, trying to divert attention from their lack of creativity and technical competence.
From a security point of view, static BLACK & WHITE images are known to be the best choice for modern identification documents. Color and the “movement” of the utilized MOTION JPEG merely distract the viewer and offer no added security value what so ever!
Clearly, at BUNDESDRUCKEREI, an underdog in comparison to international competitors, such as “GEMALTO”, “Giesecke & Devrient”, “SAGEM” or “C.F. Oberthur”, incompetence inspires the responsible people with fantasies copied from Starship Enterprise or Star Wars, in order to catch public attention. Professional Document Security experts lough at this half cocked attempt, which merely puzzles unsuspecting citizens, fearing for high costs to cover in future and giving away of personal data…..
Such gimmicks are as impractical as they are ineffective, given the high costs they would generate and the little security they would offer in
return! The next deterrent measure to counterfeiters, BUNDESDRUCKEREI might come up with, could as well be a nuclear powered ID Card/Passport which explodes Hiroshima style, when tampered with.
