[talk] Community Anti-Patterns

Excellent talk by Dave Neary

developing software in the open (source environment)

Session Summary:

It may be hard to identify the magic that goes into a successful free software community project, but it is easy to identify patterns in unsuccessful community-building efforts. I present a humorous look at the most common and egregious anti-patterns observed over the years in online communities, and propose counter-measures which can be used to combat their onset.

anti-patterns: Cookie-Licker, Help Vampire, RTFM, Headless Chicken, Water Cooler, Blackhole, Broken Window, Community as emotional places

[vid] Don’t steal a hacker’s notebook…

20 minutes of hilarity…

“Pwned By The Owner: What Happens When You Steal A Hacker’s Computer” by Zoz

Having your place broken into and your computer stolen can be a nightmare. Getting revenge on the fucker who has your machine can be a dream come true. I had the opportunity to experience both of these when my machine was stolen in Boston and then showed up in Las Vegas 2 years later. Come share some laughs at a lamer’s expense, participate in the pwnage, and learn some resulting insights into the implications of certain security decisions.

[Vid] You know SCRUM? Think again...

I meet a lot of people who think they know something about SCRUM, and why SCRUM doesn’t work.
And if I ask “Why do you think that?”… I get funny answers like:

“we tried it, we had our daily scrum… every other Friday. ”
“there is never enough time in the timebox.”
“What do you mean: talk to each other?”

There is only one way to understand SCRUM: learn from the best.

You can start right here by watching this Google Techtalk about SCRUM held by Ken Schwaber.
Do it!

“Design by Demut”, Dr. Daniel Mölle

Auszug aus der ix 090909:

Wolfram|Alpha: Making the world’s knowledge computable

Today’s Wolfram|Alpha is the first step in an ambitious, long-term project to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable by anyone. You enter your question or calculation, and Wolfram|Alpha uses its built-in algorithms and growing collection of data to compute the answer. Based on a new kind of knowledge-based computing… more »
